11th June 2013 Ockendon Studio School today celebrated becoming the first school in the country to become an accredited member of the National Skills Academy (NSA)Retail division. Already delivering the industry recognised Worldhost Training programme to their students this accreditation adds further credibility to our commitment to providing skills and experience for our students relevant to retail. As retail is an important local industry sector the school hopes this will assist in opening the doors for career opportunities with national retailers for their students. John Browning, NSA Membership Services Manager presented Mrs King with a glass plaque and certificate at an official ceremony today. He commented, “It is a great day for the NSA as Ockendon Studio School become the first school to be a member of the NSA for retail. There are some fantastic careers in retail in what is now a very sophisticated industry. It is great to collaborate with Ockendon Studio School and what we learn here will be the pattern for the future.” Mrs King thanked the NSA for “believing in the Studio School and its commitment to giving our students real work experiences by working closely with employers. This is a new way of working with 14 to19 year olds and we are proud to be leading the way.” Membership and accreditation by the NSA also means our students have access to additional training through the NSA and to access the expertise of its members. In addition to this Studio School students will be the first students to undertake the pre-apprenticeship programme as a pre-16 course. Attending the event were representatives of intu Lakeside, Thurrock council representatives as well as senior staff from The Ockendon Academy. Intu Lakeside’s Geoff Crampton, Facilities Manager, commented “What Ockendon Studio School is doing is quite unique and inspirational. With 250 retailers at intu Lakeside it is also very relevant to this area and the current business climate.”

16th May 2013 Studio School students had the opportunity to discover more about career opportunities in the logisitic industry with Alan Appleyard from the National Skills Academy (Logisitics) today. Although Alan was able to discuss with the students lots about the logisitic industry the purpose of his visit was to get feedback from our students about a national video that is being produced. The video is aimed at young people at school and is designed to show what career opportunities there are in the logitic industry. This first visit proved to be a great success and Alan has already pencilled in another date to get more feedback from the students and work with them to develop ideas for the voice over and script. Students were in fact very impressed by the information they learnt from the experience and one commented, ” I was really surprised about the range of careers available and didn’t fully appreciate how much happens at the Port of Tilbury, literally on our doorstep.”

18th April 2013 Students pictured above with Guy Pomeroy of Canute, and Graham Farrant, CEO Thurrock Council Six students from Ockendon Studio School were invited to attend the Thurrock Top Boss Awards this evening, held at the Park Inn hotel. Although the fourth year of the competition it was the first time that students were able to enter since the age limit to the competition was lowered from 16 to 13 years old. Over a 1000 young people took part in the competition with our students amongst the 80 finalists invited to attend the awards evening. The team were thrilled to be shortlisted for two categories for the employer challenge and overall runner-up categories for the Armour product, a transport packaging solution for logisitcs company, Canute. Guy Pomeroy from Canute chose Marco Daz from the group as the indivudual who had developped the most through the project but all students thoroughly enjoyed the challenge because it was a real business problem faced by a national company. We are also very excited to announce that Canute are delighted with ourstudents ideas and are developing the Armour product to prototype stage for testing.

14th March 2013 It’s not easy for youngsters to gain employment these days upon graduating from school, college or university. At Ockendon Studio School they are working with businesses to equip their students with key business skills to give them the confidence to become entrepreneurs and set up their own businesses. As part of this Studio School students have all been set business challenge being given £10 each to set up a business. They have been encouraged to invest this initial £10 with a view to growing the business and re-investing their profits and continuing the growth. As part of the learning experience students will be reviewing their businesses and future plans with local consultancy, Grow-MyBusiness.com, who have been invited to provide advice and share their own business skills and know-how. Philip Young and Nigel Wilson, Directors of Grow-MyBusiness.com joined the students at Ockendon Studio School on March 14th to finding out how well the students businesses have fared, as well as sharing their knowledge. However, many of the students however have shown that they have what it takes to make money with their business ideas already generating profits of more than £100. They all agreed that they had learnt some valuable lessons on what not to do as well as learning what does work. The challenge will continue into the next term and Grow My Business have said they will come back to review their continued successes. Nigel said: “Being able to invest money wisely into a business enterprise and encourage those funds to grow is a key lesson for anyone considering an entrepreneurial path. We think it is great that Ockendon Studio School is encouraging its students to learn how to set up businesses as well as think about becoming employees once they leave education. To this end, Philip and I are happy to be sharing our knowledge with the students of Ockendon Studio School as they learn how to become entrepreneurs.”

14th & 28th February 2013 It was wonderful to welcome so many year 11 students and their parents to our Sixth Form open evening in February. The room was packed, with much interest in the plans and designs for the interior of the new Studio School building that will open this September. Feedback was extremely positive with parents and students commenting on how business like the interior looked. Parents were also impressed with the enrichment programme and work ready approach of the Studio School. Equally busy was the year 9 open evening at the end of the month held for students considering their GCSE options. Again the interior designs of the new Studio School building made a big impact. Students were also keen to understand how studying their GCSEs at the Studio School differed from their school or the Academy discussing the practical approach to learning utilised at Ockendon Studio School as well as the employer projects. Using the unique CREATE skills framework we were able to explain how the CREATE skills underpins academic learning to provide real life and employability skills whilst studying GCSEs. Parents were constantly impressed commenting on more than one occassion that they wished they had had this type of school and what a wonderful opportunity it provided as well as how refreshing this common sense approach was. If you missed these open evenings but are interested to find out more please call us on 01708 851661 to arrange an appointment to take a tour and meet with the Director of the Studio School.

8th February 2013 Eight Studio School students went to Norwich City Football Club on Friday to take part in the regional final of the Real Business Challenge. In a large suite that overlooked the pitch the students did not have time to admire the view as they worked very hard throughout the day on a series of business challenges. Working with them was a European representatives of the Coca Cola Company who assisted them in the tasks before the students presented their ideas to the judging panel. They had to come up with ideas for the Special Olympics including a national advertising campaign for this event that built on the success of the 2012 Olympics. Despite an excellent final presentation that demonstrated their good business and enterprise skills the students did not qualify for the next round of the competition. Mr Harrison, Studio School Personal Coach said, “ The students had a fantastic day and really developed their enterprise skills with this challenge. They also had the opportunity to hold an Olympic torch with the whole day being a great experience for them.”

24th January 2013 Ockendon Studio School students had a fabulous evening with the Lakeside Personal Shopper, Angela Polpett, last Thursday as she joined them to discuss clothing styles and specifically what to wear for work and interviews. With a rail full of clothes lent by the fashion retailer Next the students enjoyed matching the clothes to various job descriptions with surprising accuracy and good taste too! As year 12 students joining Ockendon Studio School in September 2013 will be asked to wear business dress and all Studio School students participate in work related activities it won’t be long before they are putting these lessons into practice. The students comments ranged from “I learnt that I should dress for the job” and “you need to think about the job your interviewing for before choosing the clothes” and that they felt “more confident of getting it right now” as well as made them think about the small details such as accessories’ and the importance of having clean shoes. They also gained a good understanding of making a good first impression.

15th January 2013 The High Sheriff of Essex, Christopher Palmer-Tomkinson, received a warm welcome at The Ockendon Academy and Studio School when he joined us for a fact finding visit last Tuesday (15th January). He was suitably impressed at the turnaround of the school at the site over the last decade that has seen improvements to the building infrastructure as well as to its attendance and exam result success.* The Principal Mrs King shared with the High Sheriff how this had been achieved and the aspirations of the Academy and its newly formed Studio School to continue raising the achievements of our students but also to inspire aspirations for higher education through the provision of the Studio School and Sixth Form. Mr Palmer-Tomkinson was himself inspired by the improvements particularly at Mrs Kings determination to continue taking the Academy to new heights with the new Sixth form provision opening in September 2013 in a new £1.7m Studio School building and students on roll passing the 1000 mark. The High Sheriff commented, “It was a memorable occasion to see at first hand the effect that thoughtful educational leadership can have on young minds. The Ockendon Academy has turned into a very polished seat of learning; the good design especially the planned Studio School with lots of light and the touching connection to creation with plants and animals at the Academy are to be congratulated.” *The Ockendon Academy has seen the students nearly double from 1999 figures of 560 to 2012 figure of 924 whilst success in exam results has risen in this period from only 11% achieving 5 or more GCSEs grades A* to C to 100%.
